If you are completing a Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance or Master of Applied Finance you can choose to complete a Major in a particular area of professional practice, so you can tailor your qualification to meet your specific career goals. This involves ensuring the electives you undertake sit under the relevant area of professional practice.

How many subjects do I need to complete?
If you are studying for a Graduate Diploma and you wish to major, you must complete 4 subjects from the major of your choice in addition to the 4 core subjects.
If you are studying for a Master of Applied Finance and you wish to major, you must complete 4 subjects from the major of your choice in addition to the 4 core subjects, FIN234 and FIN236, and 2 further electives.

Corporate Finance/Advisory
Corporate Finance/Advisory is an area of finance dealing with the financial decisions corporations make and the tools and analysis used to make these decisions. The primary goal of corporate finance is to maximise corporate value while reducing the firm's financial risks. The subjects offered in this stream provide students with an opportunity to gain skills and techniques in financial analysis and valuation across a variety of areas.
Positions in corporate finance/advisory include Associate, Analyst, Corporate Finance Adviser, Corporate Finance Researcher and Corporate Finance Relationship Manager.

Investment Management
Investment management is the professional management of securities (e.g. shares, bonds) and assets (e.g. real estate), to meet specified investment goals of investors. Investment managers manage funds on behalf of investors who may be institutions (insurance companies, superannuation funds, corporations) or retail investors.
This stream provides students with an opportunity to learn about various investment management services and processes including elements of financial analysis, asset allocation, stock selection, plan implementation and ongoing monitoring of investments. Students gain specific skills in applying investment management strategies across a broad range of investment options.
Positions in investment management include Portfolio Manager, Investment Analyst, Operations manager, Compliance officer, Property Portfolio Manager and Strategist.

Financial Markets
Financial Markets covers a range of subjects enabling students to obtain a breadth and depth of understanding of how specific markets function in a changing global market place. Students are exposed to a variety of markets including futures and options, foreign exchange and interest rate markets.
Positions in financial markets include Equities dealer, Fixed interest dealer, Money market dealer, Derivatives dealer, FX dealer, Risk Manager.

Wealth Management
Wealth management incorporates financial planning and specialist financial services. The key objectives are to provide high net worth individuals and families with tailored retail banking services, estate planning, legal resources, taxation advice and investment management,with the goal of sustaining and growing long-term wealth. Wealth management is provided by independent financial advisers or large corporate entities such as major banks and brokerage houses.
This stream is relevant for students working or seeking to work for law, accounting or brokerage firms, large banks, trust departments or investment management firms.
Positions in wealth management include Private Client Adviser, Risk Manager and Investment Consultant.

Financial planning
The Financial planning stream provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills to advise prospective clients about meeting their personal and financial goals. The stream consists of four subjects covering both conceptual and technical skills.
